Spahija Cellar in Pakrac is a unique visitor centre and the first hybrid of museum and library in Croatia. Located in a restored historical building dating back to the 18th century, Spahija Cellar has become an important venue for preserving and interpreting the cultural heritage of Pakrac and Western Slavonia. Our permanent exhibit 'Our Homeland' guides you through the fascinating history of Pakrac – starting with prehistory and ancient Rome, continuing via its mediaeval mintage, markets and artisans up until modern industry and more recently. We focus particularly on telling the tales of everyday folk; how they lived and what became of them, thus making this legacy tangible at both a human and emotive level. Further exhibits enhance your overall visiting experience: * 'Graševina world in Pakrac', which showcases local viticulture traditions and highlights the importance that grapes have played in shaping regional culture. * 'Food straight from field or kitchen,' where we explore diverse culinary influences by showcasing old family recipe books alongside authentic dishes prepared using original methods. * 'Library secrets.' This section brings together archival documents held within libraries along with artefacts found typically only in museums creating one unified narrative about life here over centuries gone by. Besides these exhibitions there are opportunities to view art works housed in gallery spaces known locally simply as ‘Pakračanska Galerija’ (Gallery) plus attend various events hosted inside multi purpose hall named after Julijana Šuica located nearby called Sali Julijane.
