The Beauties of Florence

Free Tour Florence - Another Florence

EVERY DAY AT 10.30 AM Where we go Our free walking tour of Florence starts in the middle of Piazza S. Maria Novella; the tour will be guided in English. After the introduction, we will discuss the history of Florence right in front of the Church of S. Maria Novella, and afterward, we will walk to Piazza Antinori to showcase examples of 19th-century buildings, dating back to when Florence was the capital of Italy. Next, we will head to Piazza della Repubblica, which was completely renovated in the 19th century but served as the marketplace of the city during the Roman Empire era. Walking through Via Calzaiuoli, we will reach Orsanmichele. Originally built in 1337 as a grain market, this church was later transformed into a religious site serving as the chapel for Florence's powerful craft and trade guilds. From there, we will arrive at Piazza del Mercato Nuovo, a covered market whose main attraction is the Fontana del Porcellino (Piglet Fountain). Rubbing the pig’s nose is said to guarantee your return to Florence. Finally, we will reach Piazza della Signoria, the perfect spot to demonstrate the might of the Florentine Republic. Here, we will discuss Palazzo Vecchio, the city’s town hall, and the gallery of statues located in the nearby Loggia dei Lanzi—one of Italy’s most significant public spaces. Midway through the tour, we will take a break in a special location where participants can sample authentic products typical of Florence and Tuscany. An essential aspect of our tours involves discussing...

Pompeii: The Liveliest of the Dead Cities

Discovering Pompeii: the liveliest of the dead cities

Everyone knows the history of Pompeii and by now we know everything about ancient Pompeii. That’s why I want to begin with something we do not know about Pompeii. Few people are aware that Pompeii was once among Italy’s largest and wealthiest towns within the Roman Empire; few realize that agriculture—wine growing and olive production—was central to its economy, supplying these products across every country around the Mediterranean; very little attention is paid to how easily ships coming from places like Greece or Spain, Egypt or Turkey, would dock right outside our front door so to speak - arriving straight through *Porta Marina*, the grand gateway facing out towards the open waters – hence its evocative title! And did anyone ever stop to consider just how close Pompeii actually used to be to those same seas? The massive volcanic explosion of AD 79 pushed them some eight hundred meters away… So let me invite you instead to experience life here ‘through the eyes’ of sailors docking in such an affluent port town after long voyages upon the high seas...
